Association for Welfare of Senior Citizens presents charter of demands | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 17: A deputation of the Association for Welfare of Senior Citizens had an hour-long meeting with Commissioner/Secretary, Social Welfare Department today held in Committee Room of Civil Secretariat Jammu. From the official side, among other departmental officers, the meeting was participated by Director Social Welfare Jammu as well. The issues projected in the meeting included by virtue of Central Act, 34 of 2019, ‘The Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007’ has been made applicable to the UT of J & K, replacing the State Act earlier in force. The said Act envisages making of rules and appointment of specified authorities for carrying out the purposes of the Act; which invariably include; framing of Rules under the Central Act, the constitution of Maintenance Tribunals at Sub-divisional level, the constitution of Appellate Tribunals at District level. Besides, it was pointed out that certain obligations on part of the Government of the UT as enshrined under sections 19, 20, 21, and 22 of the said Act need to be processed on priority. Other important issues highlighted in the meeting were preparation of a detailed plan for the development of “Pay and Stay Homes”, Day Care Homes” and “Old age Homes” to be implemented in a phased manner. Providing privileges relating to medical support for senior citizens and the need of wide publicity and awareness, etc about provisions of the Act for Welfare of Senior Citizens was also discussed . The expeditious decision about handing over of eight kanals of State land allocated for setting up of a “Pay and Stay Home” at village Dhami (Nagrota), or in the alternative some Government agency like JDA/JMC/Housing Board to be directed to take up the project as a welfare measure. Allotment of a small piece of land (measuring approximately 5-6 Marla) within Jammu city by JDA/JMC/Housing Board for establishing office-cum recreation spot for “Association for Welfare of Senior Citizens Jammu and Kashmir, Jammu (regd.)”. Opening of more “Centre for Dignity” in various localities of Jammu District, besides at least one each at District headquarters to start with. Representatives from the Association included A.K Arora, Patron, J.S. Sudan, President; Virender Kumar Gupta, General Secretary, Kewal Mahajan, Subash Sharma and Virender Suri. Commissioner/Secretary Social Welfare, after giving a patient hearing, assureed appropriate and prompt action on the issues detailed in the memorandum. |
