First deadline missed | | | The Health Department not being able to achieve the target to vaccinate people above 45-years of age in Jammu and Kashmir within the stipulated time is an indication that the drive is not going on at a desired pace. The department has already missed the first deadline of May 26 and now, June 31 has been set as another deadline. The officials are claiming that people are hesitant to get a COVID-19 jab due to a negative propaganda launched by a few people with vested interests, while on the other hand common people are complaining that there is shortage of vaccines. People who are hesitant to get vaccinated should bear in mind that till date millions of men and women across the globe have taken the COVID-19 jab and only a negligible population has complained about minor side effects. Experts and scientists have been reiterating that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and getting vaccinated is the only possible way out to defeat the pandemic. The government also needs to address the concern of vaccine shortage. According to the data available 23.94 percent of the population in the age group above 45-years is yet to be vaccinated in J&K and the speed at which the inoculation drive is going on it looks impossible that the entire population above 45-years in J&K will be covered till June 31. The LG led administration needs to look into the slow pace of the vaccination drive and address the lacunas. It should probe why the first deadline set by the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir was missed. The authorities have been claiming that vigorous inoculation drive is on across the union territory and teams reaching even the far-flung areas, if it’s true then why the pace is slow. Helmsmen need to answer these questions. The second wave of COVID-19 has shown signs of relenting but the experts have predicted that there is a possibility of a third wave breaking out. The virus cannot be fought without a shield and getting vaccinated is the only way to develop herd immunity. Till date no medicine has been found to treat the COVID-19 and vaccines are the only solution. Those who are showing hesitancy need to realize that if they keep on staying away from the vaccine, they may end up in a big mess. |
