Mehbooba holds meeting with ex-PDP legislators, senior leaders in Srinagar | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, July 2: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday held a meeting with former legislators and other senior party leaders in the summer capital, Srinagar, a week after the former chief minister attended an All Party Meeting (APM) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The meeting, which started at 1115 hrs on Friday at the Fairview residence of Ms Mehbooba on Gupkar road in Srinagar, is being attended by Sartaj Madni, Abdul Rehman Veeri, Nizam-ud-din Bhat, Dr Mehboob Beigh and other senior leaders. PDP sources told UNI that the meeting was called by the party president to get first hand information about the reaction of the people on the ground about the developments during the last about a week in view of the APM. “Ms Mehbooba is discussing the future plan of action, including whether to participate in the delimitation process, if invited, and Assembly elections,” they said. They said various other issues in view of the comments made by the Centre and other political parties after the APM is also being discussed. Mehbooba has already announced that she will not contest Assembly elections till the time the special status of erstwhile state of J&K is restored, saying that there will be no compromise on Article 370. The PDP chief has been very vocal about her resentment over the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35 A, besides bifurcation of J&K into two Union Territories. However, Mehbooba said that her party will take a final call on whether other leaders of her party will participate in the Assembly elections or not. Prime Minister Modi chaired a meeting of 14 leaders from eight political parties in J&K on Thursday to discuss the future course of action for the Union Territory. This was the first such initiative by the Centre since the abrogation of the special status of the erstwhile state of J&K on August 5, 2019. The Centre had invited four former chief ministers – Farooq Abdullah, his son Omar Abdullah, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Mehbooba Mufti, besides four Deputy Chief Ministers – Muzafar Hussain Beigh, Tara Chand, Nirmal Singh and Kavinder Gupta. Leaders of six other political parties -- Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami of CPI(M), Sajad Gani Lone of Peoples Conference, Mohammad Altaf Bukhari of Apni Party, Prof Bhim Singh of Panthers Party, Ravinder Raina of BJP and G A Mir of Congress – were also invited in the meeting. |
