PDP divided over boycotting assembly polls
7/3/2021 12:31:43 AM

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 2: Even as Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has announced not to participate in the elections till the restoration of Article 370, her party is divided on this issue.
Mehbooba Mufti on Friday convened a meeting of former legislators and other senior party leaders Srinagar to brief them about her meeting with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on June 24. Sources said that PDP said that the party discussed the proposed visit of the Delimitation Commission in the UT and the approach of the party in the next assembly elections. “Some party leaders made it clear that boycotting assembly elections will not be a wise decision because this step will give a walkover to opponents in the Valley”, sources said and party leaders emphasized on the need of mounting pressure on the Union Government to statehood and other issues.
“Mehbooba sought information from party leaders about the reaction of the people on the ground about the developments during the last about a week in view of the all-party-meeting”, sources said, adding, “Party discussed the future plan of action, including whether to participate in the delimitation process, if invited, and Assembly elections.
After the all-party meeting, Mehbooba said that she will not participate in power politics or take part in elections until Article 370 and 35A are restored in Jammu and Kashmir.
“I know the restoration of Article 370 and 35A is not something the Centre will give on a platter but you have to begin somewhere. We will struggle for it. The Gupkar alliance will stay together till we achieve this,” she had stated.
“We want what was given to us by the Indian Constitution back. They have belittled the Indian Constitution by abrogating Article 370 for their own electoral benefits”, she argued.
