Give up ‘who cares’ attitude
7/3/2021 12:28:39 AM
Mahajans, Khatris and Sikhs are up in arms against the J&K Government for restricting them to sell or buy the agricultural land in the Union Territory.
Members of these communities have termed this new land law as discriminatory and have been demanding that it should be amended forthwith. But till date helmsmen have not paid any attention towards their demand.
Members of the Sikh community have made it clear that if the new land law is not amended, they would not vote for Bharatiya Janata Party in the assembly elections, whenever these are held in J&K. Leaders of Khatri and Mahajan communities too have expressed similar views.
People are asking a simple question, why has this law been enacted, and what was the need for it? This move of the government has created a divide among the communities.
Under the J & K Alienation of Land Act, the former law had a relaxation clause for sale of land to non-agriculturists up to four kanals of land for construction of houses. Moreover, after independence, this law was not strictly followed in practice. During all these years many families of these three communities have purchased agricultural land across Jammu and Kashmir. The new land law has deprived these families of selling even their own land.
BJP leaders in Jammu are feeling the heat and they have approached the officials in J&K administration on a few occasions to seek amendment in this law but their suggestions and pleas have been ignored.
If this law remains intact, the local BJP leaders can face the ire of the members of these three communities, who voted for the party in the past. After the issue snowballed into a major controversy BJP leaders distanced themselves from it. Some of them even claimed that it’s the bureaucracy that is running the J&K government and BJP has got nothing to do with it.
Many leaders of Sikh, Mahajan and Khatri communities went on record to say that they were better off when the Article 370 was in vogue. It’s high time for the bureaucracy to give up it’s “who cares” attitude and listen to what people are saying. If the brewing resentment is not addressed then the BJP could pay a heavy price for it in Jammu region.
