Need for caution can’t be over-emphasized | | | As the threat of Omicron—new variant of COVID-19—is looming large, people need to be cautious and careful. The virus raising its ugly head again is a signal that the pandemic is far from over. The past two years have taught us how to fight the virus but all of us are aware of the fact that it’s contagious and spreads at a very fast pace. Since the day the new variant has arrived the government has been issuing the advisories and guidelines have been revised but it’s the people who have to take precautions to keep the virus at bay. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced that the children in the age group of 15-yrs to 18-yrs are eligible for vaccines. He also stated that adults with co-morbidities too can get a booster dose from the first week of January. It has been proven beyond that vaccines have been a potent tool to fight the COVID-19 and bring down the casualty figures. The experts are of the opinion that an outbreak of Omicron could lead to infections spreading at a fast pace. The administration needs to put its act together and gear up to face the situation that could arise due to the possibility of a third wave of COVID-19 breaking out. The testing needs to be intensified so that the positive cases are quarantined at the earliest and their contacts traced and isolated. The need for caution cannot be over-emphasised, it needs to be understood. On ground, the Covid protocols are observed in breach rather than compliance. The situation has, more or less, gone back to square one. Efforts must be stepped up to prevent the Omicron from wreaking havoc. Although the experts are claiming that the new strain won’t be as dangerous as Delta, it’s too early to come to a conclusion. People are hoping that the new variant would be controlled and things won’t turn bad but for that they need to ensure that they follow all the protocols in letter and spirit so that the virus is not given any space to spread its tentacles. The children getting vaccinated and adults getting booster doses will help, but the government needs to be prepared. |
