BANDIPORA, Jan 15: Jammu and Kashmir police claimed to have arrested six militant associates at two separate places in north Kashmir’s Bandipora and Sopore area and recovered arms and ammunition from their possession on Saturday.
Sources said that acting on specific information regarding the activities of militant associates in Bandipora town and its adjoining areas, Bandipora police, 26 AR and 3rd Bn CRPF arrested three militant associates along with arms and ammunition and other incriminating material.
The arrested people include Ghulam Mohammad, Irshad Hussain, residents of Ashtangoo Bandipora and Ashiq Hussain, a resident of Sopore, said sources.
A police official said that on preliminary inquiry it was revealed that these militant associates were working to expand the activities of Lashkar-e Toiba (LeT) outfit, especially foreign militants, by providing them logistical and other material support including mobile phones and Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards. He further said that one among the arrested persons is a former militant and his anti national activities have been recycled many times during the past.
“Arms ammunition and other incriminating material were recovered from their possession. Further investigation is going on,” the official added.
However sources also said that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detected and defused by the security forces on Saturday in Papachan area of Bandipora district.
The security forces recovered an IED from an orchard in Papachan area today, after which a bomb disposal squad was rushed to the spot and the IED was destroyed without causing any harm to life or property.
Meanwhile, Police also claimed to have arrested three associates of (LeT) Lashkar-i-Toiba militant outfit from Sopore town.
A joint naka was established by Sopore police, 22 RR and 179 BN CRPF at Chinar crossing Darpora in the jurisdiction of Police Station Bomai, the police official said.
They said that during the naka checking it was noted that three persons coming from village Gund Brath towards village Bomai were roaming in suspicious conditions and were subsequently asked to stop, but they tried to flee from the spot, however were apprehended tactfully by the vigilant security forces.
The arrested persons have been identified as Arafat Majeed Dar S/O Abdul Majeed Dar R/O Harwan Sopore, Tauseef Ahmed Dar S/O Lt Gh Hassan Dar R/O Taliyan Mohalla Arampora Sopore and Momin Nazir Khan S/O Nazir Ahmed Khan R/O Arampora Sopore AP Natipora Srinagar.
“Two pistols, two pistol magazines, thirteen pistol rounds and a hand grenade were recovered from their possession,” the police official said.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the arrested persons are associates/OGWs of proscribed militant organization LeT and have been providing logistical and other materialistic support to militants.
Accordingly, a case has been registered at Police Station Bomai under relevant sections of law and further investigation is going on,” said the police statement.
