J&K Govt fails to carry forward PM’s agenda of power reforms | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 1: Like other welfare schemes launched by the BJP led Union Government for the upliftment of marginalized and neglected sections of the society, power reforms are also confined only on papers in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Bringing reforms in the power sector is the core of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary agenda to minimize losses in this sector. While almost all states and Union Territories (UTs) have reduced transmission and distribution (T&D) losses, the Jammu and Kashmir has failed to carry forward Prime Minister’s visionary agenda. Official records of the government speak about the failure of the J&K administration to control T&D losses. It is all due to the casual approach of the authorities that installing smart meters is still a distant dream in Jammu and Kashmir in general and Kashmir Valley in particular. Even in Srinagar city-the summer capital of the Union Territory, smart meters have been installed in only 19 percent area of the capital city which is a clear indication of the government’s half-hearted approach. During a meeting chaired by Divisional Commissioner Srinagar Pandurang K Pole regarding the installation of smart meters in Srinagar city, it was informed that under smart metering project Srinagar Phase-I, out of 57750 meters, 11348 have been installed till now. However, it was promised that 15000 meters are committed to being delivered in the month of February 2022. In the year 2016, the Centre had set a deadline of one year for J&K to reduce the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) loss to 41 percent from the existing 64 percent, but nothing has been done so far. T&D losses in J&K are the highest in the whole country and the Centre has repeatedly reprimanded the successive governments for their failure to reduce these losses. Under the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (R-APDRP) scheme, the Centre is pumping huge funds to improve power infrastructure in J&K but unlike other states and UTs, authorities have so far failed to bring required reforms in the power sector. |
