| Snow sinks six houseboats in Kashmir | | |

SRINAGAR, Feb 24: At least six houseboats were submerged in the Dal Lake and river Jehlum due to heavy snowfall in the Kashmir Valley. Five houseboats of different categories went down in the Dal Lake while one sank in Jehlum, said the General Secretary of the Houseboat Owners Association, Abdul Rashid Kaloo.
Many Shikaras also sank in the Dal Lake. However, no loss of life was reported.
He said the snowfall was very heavy and the houseboats could not sustain the weight. Kaloo said: "Many houseboats from category D require repairs so that they can sustain and continue their business. For that we have pleaded before the authorities to issue Deodhar wood to repair the houseboats."
He said since the authorities had banned the repairs of the houseboats, they sank. |
