Pollution plagues Devika river, authorities unmoved | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 24: Even as Union Minister of State in PMO, Dr Jitendra Singh recently stated that Rs 190 crore river Devika rejuvenation project at Udhampur will be completed by June this year, the water quality of the sacred river is continuously deteriorating at a rapid pace due to the havoc wreaked by a nearby market. Due to the apathy of the administration, the river’s water is getting polluted on a regular basis as the Sairgah Road leading to holy Devika river looks like a dumping site. The drain adjoining the road remains blocked. There is hardly any cleanliness and maintenance of proper sanitation on the road. Though the shop owners are solely responsible for polluting the river as they dump their waste on Sairgah Road, the authorities have failed to take action against the offenders while they have also made no efforts to take corrective measures. The concerned authorities appear to be quite careless about how to address the issue concerning the resultant menace of pollution of the river. Crores of rupees were supposedly spent on keeping the river pollution-free, but till date, no proper drainage system has been put in place. |
