‘Babushahi’ harassing poor people in Jammu: BJP | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Feb 24: Even as senior BJP leaders have maintained a criminal silence over anti-people policies of the present bureaucratic government in Jammu and Kashmir, grassroots level party leaders have started airing their anger against bureaucrats for compounding woes of the poor people. During the last week, Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (JPDCL) has started a campaign to snap power connections in the localities inhabited by lower, lower-middle-class, and Below-Poverty-Line (BPL) families for not paying power dues. This “inhuman” action of the authorities have evoked strong reaction from different sections of the society because higher-ups have failed to take action against influential persons who owe power dues to the tune of lakhs. BJP corporator from ward number 23 of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) Pawan Singh, who won the election with a record margin, expressed his anger against this arrogant and inhuman attitude of the authorities. “This government is harassing poor people in one way or other. Drive to disconnect power supply has been launched in the areas inhabited by the poor people”, he regretted and smelt a deep-rooted conspiracy in launching such schemes to instigate people against BJP. “Sab Ka Vikas, Sab Ka Saath, and Sab Ka Vishwas is the slogan of our respectable Prime Minister but in J&K some elements are hellbent to harass poor people”, he regretted and pointed out that there is a governance deficit in the Union Territory. Pawan Singh demanded that instead of abruptly snapping power connections of poor families, the government must fix installments to give relief to such families who are bearing brunt of the pandemic. As reported earlier by this newspaper, recently it was revealed in an RTI reply that influential persons including politicians in Jammu and Kashmir, including former ministers and MLAs, owe power dues to the tune of lakhs to the Power Development Department (PDD). The former ministers and legislators were provided official accommodations with a 24-hour power supply after the PDP-BJP coalition government came to power on March 1, 2015. Though the state is now under President’s rule, the bills of these politicians have not yet been cleared. |
