In Jammu smart city’s meeting on Tawi, no mention of artificial lake! | Last Gayee, Baat Gayee! | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 4: Even as the Jammu Smart City Limited has held a meeting on the Tawi River Front Development Project, there was no mention of the artificial lake, which awaits completion for years. Sources said on March 3, the Jammu Smart City Limited (JSCL), officials visited the construction site to review the progress of Tawi River Front Development project here. The Chief Executive Officer, the Additional CEO and other senior officials were accompanied by the officials of Project Management Consultancy (PMC) accompanied CEO, JSCL. After taking first-hand information on the status of the Development project, the JSCL officials passed directions to officials and project executing agencies to expedite pace of work to complete the ambitious project in a stipulated time frame. It was observed that “completion of the project would add to the aesthetic value of the city of temples as well as provide business opportunities to the citizens.” “The ambitious project is being developed on the lines of the Sabarmati riverfront in Gujarat to enhance natural purifying capabilities, as well as strengthen environmental and urban infrastructure sustainability.” The foundation stone of the project was laid a few months ago by Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha. This project envisages protection of River Tawi with broad salient features of construction of diaphragm walls, lower promenade, retaining wall, embankment construction, apart from beautification. But the sources said, none of officials present during the visit spoke about the artificial lake project which was never completed. “It seems that there are little or no chances of the artificial lake being developed in real sense, otherwise why wouldn’t it be discussed?” asked a senior official at the Civil Secretariat on the condition of anonymity. He said the Tawi riverfront project cannot be seen in isolation without artificial lake. “Riverfront is all linked to artificial lake and when a meeting on riverfront doesn’t discuss artificial lake, things look messy,” said the senior official. Marred by “delays and cancellations" since its start in 2009, the Jammu and Kashmir administration had in November 2021 set a fresh deadline of 2023 to complete the multi-crore artificial Tawi lake project in Jammu. After missing the first target date in 2012, the contractor missed five other deadlines in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, when the contractor stopped work, prompting authorities to cancel its project and order a probe. When contacted a senior official said the artificial lake work was underway and that a “small portion” of it was likely to be commissioned this year. He said the full project was likely to be ready by 2023. |
