Aspirants suspect ARs recruitment process as PG admission 'fraud' spoils KU's image | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 17: With the alleged PG admission scam rattling the University of Kashmir and tarnishing its image in the eyes of public, questions are now being raised over the credibility of the ongoing recruitment process for the lapsed posts of Assistant Registrars. Incidentally, the Mains Examination for the posts of ARs is scheduled to be held on March 23 by the University’s Directorate of Admissions and Competitive Examinations which has been accused of admitting many ineligible candidates through IT platform for various PG programmes for the first time in the university’s history, thus smashing the credibility and sanctity of the university’s admission process beyond repairs. Many AR aspirants say that they are doubtful whether the recruitment process, including the Preliminary Test conducted by the Directorate of Admissions, was fair and credible and whether the upcoming Mains exams would be held in a transparent manner. The KU’s PG admission mess came to the fore after it surfaced that despite having an online application submission software developed by the University's Directorate of IT, many candidates made it in the final selection lists despite not having the required number of credits (24) in the UG level, which was an essential requirement for securing admission in the PG departments. It is alleged that the so-called IT system had completely failed to recognise the ineligible candidates and allowed their submission of applications despite the candidates not having sufficient credits at the UG level. “It has been a complete failure on part of University's IT system and other admission related departments in the university," the insiders alleged. To do some damage control, the University has written to heads of departments to furnish details of ineligible candidates so that their illegal admission is cancelled and the university’s tarnished image is somehow salvaged. However, according to senior teachers, there’s very little guarantee that all HODs would furnish exact details of ineligible candidates in order to “save their skin". “There should be an independent committee constituted by the chancellor to probe the entire admission process so that full figures of such illegal admissions are known and the responsibility of fixed for this serious lapse,” said a head of department. "The University administration has remembered after many months to get credit details of students from HODs. It is a mockery. Heads must roll to set an example. The students should not be punished for fault of University officials." Many HODs allege that the admission process has been messed up jointly by the Admission Directorate, IT wing and top university administrators who are not ready to take blame for their fault and are rather passing the buck on poor and hapless students instead of taking action against concerned officials for this serious lapse. On Tuesday KU authorities issued a long official statement saying such admissions of ineligible candidates had been cancelled "three months ago". But sources told Early Times that more such admissions are in the notice of the concerned authorities which however are being allegedly kept under wraps to evade further embarrassment and the tag of academic and administrative ineptitude for the present regime. Amid this never-seen-before mess up of admission process, the Director of Admissions Prof Farooq is presently handling two confidential assignments including conduct of AR Mains Exam and rendering of Secretarial Assistance to the Search Committee constituted by Raj Bhawan to find the new VC for the University of Kashmir, sources said. “If ineligible candidates were admitted to PG programmes, what’s the guarantee that AR examination will be conducted in a fair manner and backdoor entries will not be made?” many AR aspirants asked, urging Chancellor Manoj Sinha to order a probe into the PG admission "fraud" and AR recuitment process which has already come under cloud of suspicion. The posts of ARs had lapsed after the expiry of their two-year term but the university administration, instead of readvertising these posts, granted a six month extension to complete the process citing that they couldn't complete the process due to Covid19 pandemic. However university insiders say the VC was not the competent authority to grant any such extension and the matter had to be sent to the University Council headed by LG Manoj Sinha. No action has as of now been taken against officials involved in the admission fraud, sources said. |
