Early Times Report

Jammu, Mar 21: Within hours after Raj Bhawan issued formal order regarding the appointment of Prof. Umesh Rai as new Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University, social media flooded with stories published in different newspapers and websites in April 2014 when the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor had faced the wrath of the activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for allegedly passing highly derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Some netizens expressed surprise at the choice while some others satirically posted that Raj Bhawan of Jammu and Kashmir has awarded Prof. Umesh Rai for allegedly “insulting” Prime Minister Narendra Modi as mocking him as “Chaiwalla”.
Many netizens have shared reports published in different newspapers and websites at that time when this incident took place in the year 2014.
As per a report published in April 8, 2014 edition of “The Hindu,” the incident reportedly unfolded on Monday, the 7th of April. Raju Rawat, a member of ABVP (the RSS-run students’ party), met Professor Umesh Rai in order to discuss the complaint of some FYUP students who had not received laptops. It is alleged that Prof. Rai behaved rudely and asked Rawat to leave.
Rawat, in his statement to The Hindu, told the professor that “his attitude would not last long since the Modi government would come and get rid of FYUP”. To which Rai replied by saying, “Chaiwallahs are not equipped to come and take university decisions”. Rawat and a group of a few more students also smeared black paint on the Professor’s face. The then Joint Secretary said he lost his temper at these words and hit the professor. It is also alleged that he blackened the professor’s face. Prof. Rai has filed a complaint against Rawat, said the police.
Although ABVP had condemned Rawat’s behaviour, and suspended him from the organization.
