Amid promises of providing free water, electricity; taps run dry in Digiana for 4-days, resident block highway | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 9: Amidst promises of providing free water and electricity, Digiana area in Jammu city has been without water supply for the past four days. Residents of Digiana blocked the highway on Saturday against the failure of the administration to provide them with electricity and potable water. Protesters said that taps in their area have been running dry for the past four days. “In a month their motor to pump the water gets burnt twice. We witness this drama every year.” They said, “No one from the department has come to the area to listen to us.” The protesters were seen arguing with the policemen. “Please don’t block the road. We will take up the matter with the concerned department,” the police officer is heard saying. After assurances from the police officer, the protesters allowed the vehicles to move on the highway. “It’s unfortunate that no one is listening to us. The officials seem least bothered about our sufferings. Not only water, our area has also been facing unscheduled power cuts,” they said. Protesters said, “The MLA who won from our area never visited us. This government has not given us anything except miseries.” “We have not a single drop of water in our homes. We pay Rs 3000/ as water fee annually. For what are we paying the fee? J&K has become an orphan. Outsiders are calling the shots and are least. |
