Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 9: In spite of giving more than Rs. 150 Crore revenue to the government a month, the industrial units in Jammu are being hounded with latest pesky power cuts plunging the sector into crises. The government in recent days came up with a strategy to cut power supplies in Jammu’s industrial areas for three hours every day. This has led to the chaotic situation on the ground with apprehensions being raised that such a measure will cast a dark spell over industrial growth in Jammu and will further surge the unemployment in the region to a large extent. The outages, as per reports, will also severely affect the production of goods in the industrial area and would create a vacuum between demand and supplies on the ground.
While the government keeps on making claims about ensuring industrial growth in Jammu, the power cuts have reduced such claims to twig leaves, making mockery of the promises of good and effective governance. Early Times has recently reported that the power crisis has started deepening in Jammu and Kashmir.
There is a demand of 3100 MW of electricity every day. In contrast, only 1937 MW could be made available in the state. In a bid to further hound the already crisis-ridden business fraternity, Orders have been issued to curtail power supplies in industrial areas in Jammu from 6 to 9 am Samba, Kathua, and Udhampur from 5 to 8 pm. The PDD as per the reports has directed the Jammu division to ensure consumption below 870 MW and Kashmir below 1150 MW. It is being informed that the way the temperatures have surged rapidly in the last few days, the state has consumed 400 MW more power from the northern grid.
According to official sources, the consumption of 785 MW in Jammu and 1152 MW in Kashmir has been recorded on Thursday morning. Northern Grid as per the reports is continuously giving instructions to Jammu and Kashmir to follow grid discipline to get electricity.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the industrial units in Jammu were perturbed to the core due to the new curtailment schedule, apprehending large scale losses due to the government decision. “This is unnatural. The government is earning more than 150 crore rupees as power tariffs from industries here and when it comes to ensuring proper power supplies, the administration is reflecting its failed policies and measures,” says a Jammu based unit holder.
