Big challenge for teachers
Vijay Garg4/9/2022 11:39:42 PM
After all, after two years all the schools have opened. Two years is a very long time in the life of young children. In the ‘Taleem Per Tala’ survey report last year, we studied school education in 15 states. In this we found that only a quarter of the children in urban areas were studying regularly and in rural areas their number was less than 10%. More than half of the children had not even met their teacher for the past one month.
However, online education remained an effective option for the children of the able-bodied class. This door was also closed for the children who come from weaker sections. The first challenge is to ensure that children do not drop out of school. According to UNICEF, a survey found that 38% of the respondents knew a girl who had dropped out of school. The study of government data (2020-21) shows that the drop-out rate in secondary school is 14%.
The second challenge is that when children return to school, do not lose heart due to difficulties in studies. There is a need to make a careful policy for the children who have reached from the first grade to the third or the third to the fifth without going to school for a single day. They have to make a habit of getting up early in the morning, getting ready, going to school, sitting still in class constantly. It needs the support of the family.
There are many steps the government can take to attract schools. Although schools have opened, mid-day meals have not resumed in all states. Children’s entitlement mid-day meal should be given regularly immediately. For many years, there has been a demand from many states to include nutritious food (such as eggs) in the mid-day meal menu.
With the mid-day meal, children will come to school every day because of the greed of food, but at the same time they will be able to put more effort in studies after having a full stomach. A study in Delhi found that children who received cooked food spent more time solving a maze puzzle than other children. According to the Annual Survey of Education Report (Asar), even before Kovid, according to the class in which children are in, their achievements used to be low.
Now these children will have to study for two years beyond their potential without practicing anything, without learning anything. This is a big challenge for teachers. Children backward in studies, who did not get a chance to study at home for the last two years, will struggle in studies without proper support when they return to school. If the school teacher does not encourage them, they are not able to give them extra time, then the morale of these children will be broken and there is a fear of drop-out from school in no time.
To avoid this, there is a dire need to create a sensitive atmosphere in the school. In some states these challenges have been recognized and some positive steps have also been taken. The Jharkhand government has launched a month-long Back to School campaign, including Baste Se Mukti Diwas, to hope that children do not panic about returning to school. When high-grade schools opened in Tamil Nadu last year, efforts were made to provide counseling for mental support to children.
When he returned after two years, it was only fair that the children would be distraught. The Happiness Curriculum in Delhi will focus on basic abilities for two hours a day. Some states have created bridge courses, which have assessed the extent of loss in basic abilities of children. Much more needs to be done, such as extra support in studies for the children can be provided by paying honorarium to the Anganwadi worker. But in most states, these issues are probably not getting enough attention.
There has been an initiative to provide sensitive support to children returning to school around the world. The big challenge is that we discuss these issues or else children will drop out of school in small classes. This will deprive children of an entire generation of their right to basic education.
