Maldives Parliament Speaker calls on Om Birla | | | agencies NEW DELHI, Apr 27: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla held a a bilateral meeting with Speaker of the Parliament of Maldives (Majlis) Mohamed Nasheed in New Delhi on Wednesday. Birla described last year's attack on Nasheed as a cowardly act, and said it was a matter of concern to the people of India and the Indian Parliament. He expressed happiness that Nasheed has recovered completely and is now healthy. Nasheed, 53, who is also the former president of Maldives, was badly injured in an explosion outside his home in Male. Lauding the successful implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Parliaments of India and Maldives on further cooperation in the areas of digitization, archives and legislative drafting, Birla hoped that such steps would help in capacity building of the parliamentary institutions of Maldives. Speaking on the need for further enhancing parliamentary diplomacy between the two countries and to promote the visits of Parliamentary delegations, Birla expressed confidence that a bilateral Parliamentary Friendship Group would be constituted between India and Maldives soon.
