CSA announce franchise-based T20 league | | | agencies JOHANNESBURG, Apr 29: Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Friday announced a new six-team franchise-based T20 competition in association with SuperSport. The name of the competition will be announced at the official launch of the league. The inaugural edition is scheduled for January 2023, immediately after the Proteas tour to Australia. January will be the dedicated window for the tournament for subsequent editions. The tournament will have six privately owned franchises playing each other in a double round robin format before the top three sides move to the play-off stages. According to a CSA release, the league will feature international players alongside South African nationals. In each match, there can be up to four overseas players. "We are excited by the formation of something this fresh and invigorating, which also offers the opportunity for private investment into the franchises. CSA has already received interest from a number of potential local and international investors," said Pholetsi Moseki, CSA CEO. CSA and SuperSport have signed an agreement to form a new company that will manage a new T20 competition. "The company is looking at a very attractive player salary bill per team that will rival other leagues around the world outside of the Indian Premier League (IPL)," it said in a statement. Marc Jury, SuperSport CEO, said: "We are delighted to invest in a product that will change the face of South African cricket. There is an early-year gap in the calendar, so the timing is ideal." |
