Not an easy job | | | The University Grants Commission (UGC) earlier last month announced that students can now pursue two undergraduate or postgraduate degrees/diplomas simultaneously in the physical, online or combination modes in accordance with the National Education Policy. This will allow the students to pursue two UG or PG degrees/diplomas together in the physical+physical mode or physical+online mode or online+online mode. On papers this looks like a revolutionary step to popularize education. But if one looks into the practical aspects of this announcement it can lead to students sailing in two boats and they may end up doing nothing. Pursuing two degrees simultaneously is not going to be an easy job for the students. They will end up losing focus. Attending offline classes for the two courses could prove to be a Herculean task. There is a possibility about the students opting for online, offline combination of studies but still things are not going to be that easy. If the option works out it will allow the students to develop multiple skills in a short span of time. It would turn them into multi-task masters and would increase their chances of getting employed. Another factor that policy makers need to bear in mind is that there is no guarantee that students may develop the requisite skills by getting two degrees. If the institutions compromise on the quality of teaching this will turn the students as jack of all trades and master of none. Instead of giving the students the option of pursuing two degrees simultaneously, the government should focus on improving the infrastructure of the existing educational institutions and providing other facilities to the students. The policy makers have taken the decision, now they have to see how many students opt for two degrees and will this experiment work. If the idea about allowing students to pursue two degrees simultaneously works, it will revolutionize the entire education system and can lead to trained workforce getting ready to handle the future challenges. More than students, universities hold the key. These institutions have to ensure that the students get a quality education and they are trained before they go out to explore their own world. Pursuing two degrees simultaneously is a challenge for students so is it for the universities that will enroll them. |
