Palli rally expenditure : Demand for probe gains momentum

Jammu, May 4: Demand for a high-level probe into the expenditure of the recently held rally at Palli Panchayat in Samba district gained momentum.
Despite spending crores and crores of rupees, the firm engaged in the event management has miserably failed to come up to the expectations of both Union and UT governments.
Although the government has yet not disclosed the total expenditure on the rally, opposition parties have alleged that as much as Rs 100-crore was spent on the political-cum-official rally held on April 22.
All government employees were forced to attend this rally. Due to the popularity of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi rally recorded a huge turnout of the people, there was total mismanagement during the event. The sound system failed when some VIPs were speaking.
The J&K government is hesitating to reveal the name of the firm to whom tender was allocated for event management but it is widely alleged that some influential persons in the corridors of Babus are trying their best to hide all misdeeds and mismanagement in the rally due to their proximity with the firm.
“Every section of the society is disappointed and disheartened after the much-touted Palli Chalo rally for which the Jammu and Kashmir has spent hundreds of crores of rupees”, spokesperson of PDP Varinder Singh Sonu has demanded recently.
He alleged that the J&K government has spent hundreds of crores of rupees on a political rally which was ultimately a directionless show.
“There are allegations that tender for event management was allocated to a non-local firm on very high rates despite the fact that some local firms were agreed to organize the event on lower rates ”, he said.
Congress leader Pranab Shagotra alleged that government funds, which were shamelessly mis-utilized for the political event were sufficient enough to purchase three months' power to give a big relief to the residents of Jammu in the summer months.
“According to a rough estimate minimum, Rs 100 crores were misused from the government’s exchequer for the political event just to give political benefit to the BJP”, he said, adding, “Had that amount spent on purchasing power, the situation would have been better in Jammu region”.
