Jammu,Aug 17: Days after death of two children in Delhi after they were grievously injured by the killer Chinese kite thread, people in Jammu are scared of the kite flying which is an essential component of Rakshabandhan celebration in the region since ages.
The news of the killing of two young girls in national capital due to this killer kite thread had sent a wave of grief and panic across the country and also raised the hackles within the administration which has failed to keep a check on the import and sale of this killer thread despite imposition of ban. In Jammu too, there have been numerous incidents of serious injuries due to the killer thread. Interestingly, the administration has imposed a ban on procurement and sale of this kite thread in Jammu as well, but same has still been available for sale. “Last year my cousin was seriously wounded when he was entangled by this killer thread while riding his bike. Since then, there is panic in entire family and we do not allow our children to fly kites” said Suraj Prakash, a resident of Mohalla Paharian in old city.
Meanwhile, city is swayed by the celebrations of the age old festival that highlights the pious bonds of love between brothers and sisters. While brothers reiterate their commitment to protect their sisters under all circumstances, sisters pray for the prosperity and long life of their brothers. In border areas along Jammu, Women and girls tie Rakhis to the jawans and officers of Army and Security forces who are away from their families, as a mark of love and reverence towards them.
Days ahead of the festival, the city markets have been laden with colourful Rakhi threads and gift items Long queues have been seen outside noted sweet shops of the city as sweets continue to be the essential ingredient of traditional Rakhi ritual.
The festival that falls on the ‘Ashaarh Purnima’ also marks the conclusion of annual pilgrimage of Shri Amaarnathji and the Chhari Pujan is performed at the holy cave on the occasion, marking the culmination of Yatra.
