Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 17: Notwithstanding the fact that there is an increase in the number of attacks on working doctors in the last few years by the attendants of patients, in the Government Medical College and Hospital, the administration has so far failed to provide security to them.
In the last one decade, whenever there was an attack on a doctor by the attendants, the doctors had to come on roads for want of security but every time the Medical College administration was found giving hollow assurances, instead of permanent solution to problem.
The failure of administration has been causing inconvenience to the general public as well as the doctors, who have been compelled to work without break given the shortage of manpower and continuous risk of assault.
For the last four days junior doctors have been protesting against the administration for their long pending demand of security cover but instead of addressing the issue, the GMC&H administration has reportedly issued rustication orders of some doctors and has also issued threats of getting poor marks in supplementary exams.
Protesting doctors informed Early Times that security cover in Emergency wards was their long pending demand, for which once again they have been forced to adopt agitational path due to cold response of administration.
Pertinently the doctors went on strike, after attendants of a brought dead patient badly beat a doctor in presence of police force and police officials in Emergency ward of GMC&H four days back.
"We continuously work for more than 36 hours and we know that it is our moral duty to provide best treatment to all the patients, which we have been doing with utmost care but it is very painful for the hard working doctors, whenever someone attack us.
Is it not the moral duty of the attendants, citizens to respect the doctors and allow the doctors to do their work properly?", a protesting doctor rued.
The protesting doctors further said that a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Station House Officer along with huge security contingent was present in the premises of GMC, when people assaulted the doctor.
"When we had approached the DySP and SHO, they had shown their helplessness and lodged an FIR only after 17 hours of the incident and that too after doctors went on strike", a doctor said, while expressing anger against police.
Another doctor said that the Principal is the guardian of the College but it was very much unfortunate to have reports that he openly brandished gun in front of the Minister.
"If the reports of Principal showing gun are correct then there are every possibilities that such person can threaten anyone and in fit of anger, he can fire", the doctors said.
Criticizing the administration, the protesting doctors further said that for the last many years, they have been demanding permanent security cover. "We are feeling pain of the patients and their attendants, who have been facing hardships due to our strike but we are compelled to go on protest. Whenever the administration will issue an order of 30 security personnel permanently deputed in Emergency wing, we will call off strike", another doctor said, adding that the Emergency has more than eight wards and 10 persons each would be available for 8 hours duty but such demand has repeatedly been ignored by the administration.
The administration has reportedly communicated to Deputy Commissioner for invoking Section-144 against the protesting doctors. "Some PG students have been permanently rusticated and even Professors have been threatening the doctors of giving very poor marks in supplementary exams. Is it justice with the peacefully protesting doctors, demanding security cover, after repeated attacks", a doctor said.
He further said that few days back, even some attendants brandished weapons to doctor after barging into Operation Theater and forced him to operate in front of them. "Even some attendants also attempted to molest a female doctor near Cafeteria during night hours and without security personnel, how the doctor will work", the doctors said, adding that whenever the administration would accept their demand of providing security they would call off their strike.
