Srinagar, Aug 17: While it's a matter of pride for every Indian to get a chance to officially hoist national tricolor on the Independence Day, three of the ministers from ruling the Peoples Democratic Party led government on August 15 "refused" to chair the celebrations in restive Kashmir allegedly citing "threat to personal security."
Highly placed sources said the intelligence agencies have informed New Delhi about shocking behavior of the trio, who were otherwise expected to chair Independence Day celebrations in various district headquarters of Kashmir.
The news has spread like wildfire in the political circles across the state. Insiders said the issue was even discussed on Wednesday at the all party meeting hosted by former Chief Minister and National Conference working president Omar Abdullah at his Sonawar residence here.
Sources said one of the ministers was expected to hoist tricolor at the main Independence Day celebrations at Bandipora, while the other two were expected to take guard of honor elsewhere. "The second one was expected to hoist tricolor in a frontier district, while third one was slated to take guard of honor in central Kashmir district," official sources said.
Officials said as per the protocol, the convention has always been that ministers are the first to do the honors of hoisting tricolors in various districts.
"The celebrations at Bakshi Stadium, the main venue for the Independence Day celebrations in the state are chaired by the Chief Minister, while the functions at other district headquarters are to be headed by the ministers. And, if the number of ministers is lesser than the number of districts, only then the MOS are given a chance to do the honors," explained a senior official in the Civil Secretariat, asking not to be identified.
This time, however, while the three ministers stayed away from hoisting the tricolor, the government was left with no options but to bank on junior ministers to take guard of honor.
Sources said one of the junior ministers was informed about the decision on August 14. The MOS rushed straight to a beauty parlor at a five star hotel for preparations.
Though the MOS willingly hoisted the tricolor and even addressed a rally, the three cabinet ministers stayed back.
Sources said the trio had conveyed to the party leadership that "given the prevalent unrest it would be inappropriate for them to be chief guest at the district headquarters."
The trio, however, attended the main function held at Bakshi Stadium where Mehbooba Mufti hoisted the national flag and took guard of honor.
All three of them were seen sitting in the front row, relishing Kehwa together, while Doordarshan Kendra often zoomed camera on them during the celebrations.
