Jammu, Aug 17: Continuing with its endeavor Mission Parthenium Eradica, AICRP-Weed Management, Division of Agronomy, SKUAST-Jammu under the dynamic and visionary leadership of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Dr P K Sharma initiated Week long Parthenium Awareness campaign on 16th of August, 2016 which is being organized simultaneously on national level from 16-22 August, 2016. The crux of the programme is to create awareness and educate the people, farmers and students about the Parthenium menace, which has also been recognized as one of the seven most dreadful weeds of the world. On the opening day of "Parthenium Awareness Week" Dr D P Abrol, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, emphasised that Parthenium weed locally called as Gajar Ghass or Congress, Carrot Grass is causing enormous losses in agricultural productivity, human and animal health and biodiversity. Dr BC Sharma, Head, Division of Agronomy explained that the Parthenium should be uprooted before flowering especially in rainy season and also stressed over the wider coverage of this awareness campaign by extending it through organization of camps for community awareness to take up the eradication programme in community lands viz. road sides, parks, school areas etc of Jammu Province. Meanwhile, Dr B R Bazaya, incharge AICRP Weed Management highlighted various harmful effects of Parthenium on crops, livestock and human beings viz-a-viz allergy-type responses like hay fever, photo-dermatitis, asthma, skin rashes, peeling skin, puffy eyes, and eczema in human being through pollen, air borne pieces of dried plant materials and roots. |
