Vicitm mourns indifference of society | Cop promoted for molesting girl | | ET Report JAMMU, Jan 1: As the civil society across the country seems aghast over the unfortunate Delhi incident, molestation of a girl in a police station of Jammu Kashmir has almost gone un-noticed. Surprisingly the separatist leadership in Kashmir which misses no opportunity to take the men in uniform to task for every wrong that happens in the State remained mum and the girl from Kashmir was left to fend on her own. Vinisa Chisti, resident of Kashmir, now in New Delhi, was molested in Gandhi Nagar police lock up by former SHO. The girl in her complaint alleged that she was molested by the SHO in police station Gandhi Nagar. She said while she was sitting with her foreign friends in Jammu University Cafeteria, some goons passed a remark. The girl slapped one of them and found herself in the police lock up where she was allegedly molested. The girl sought intervention of the Chief Secretary who ordered an enquiry. However, the enquiry held that the girl was in the lock up for two hours only. On the basis of this report, he was exonerated and then promoted. Now he is a DySP and posted in his home town Kathua. The erring SHO was even awarded a medal for his `meritorious' services. The erring policeman's promotion has added to the injury of the girl. The only help that came was from media. The media highlighted the issue but the authorities remained un-moved. Instead of accepting the victim's story, the authorities chose to believe the enquiry report and gave the erring SHO a clean chit. People close to the victim have taken strong exception over `shameful' silence of civil society, mainstream politicians and the separatists over the incident. "We expected moral support from Syed Ali Geelani but he too remained silent", they said. |
