Of counter defamation and hollow notices: Much a do about nothing | | | Abodh Sharma JAMMU, Jan 1: Notices to politicians and their blue eyed bureaucrats by the State accountability and transparency institutes of the State might have rendered them defunct, but the notices they issue against one another generally prove to be much ado about nothing. While counter notices by NPP president Harsh Dev Singh and Political Advisor to Chief Minister Devender Rana made headlines the previous day, nothing has been heard about the legal notice that Rana issued to Sajjad Lone in July last when latter charged the Political Advisor of arm twisting the cable industry of Kashmir and also of misuse of his official position and authority. "I challenge Sajjad Lone or anybody else to cite or prove even a single instance in the last three and half years that I have called up any Government functionary for any of my business interests, even a single instance shall be good enough for me to suffer consequences," Rana had said adding, my channel is operating in Kashmir since 2003 and is not something which has cropped up recently as has been wrongly projected by Sajjad Lone". Rana had reiterated that he had asked his lawyer to move the court of law to file a defamation suit against Sajjad Lone for making reckless false allegations against his person. Six months after the defamation suit was reportedly filed, nothing has been heard on it. Rana also moved a privilege motion against PDP MLC Murtaza Khan in the State Legislative Council on March 14 last year when latter named NC patriarch and Union Minister for Renewable Energy Dr. Farooq Abdullah in JKCA funds misappropriation. This time however, he insisted that the privilege motion be admitted in the State Legislative Council and the same was then referred to the privilege committee by the Chairman of the LC Amrit Malhotra. "The motion lies pending with the privilege committee headed by Ajatshatru Singh, which has not taken any call on it as yet," said a senior member of the LC. Similar motion of breach of privilege moved by Vijay Bakaya, also against Murtaza Khan for alleged use of unparliamentary language and attempted physical assault on thefloor of the House has also met the same fate. Now that Rana and Harsh Dev have sued each other with multi crore defamation suits, whether the fight of 'fame' reaches to logical conclusion or ends up in mere shadow boxing would be interesting to see. |
