Rapes In Kashmir Gen Singh calls Habibullah's bluff | | | Rustam JAMMU, Jan 1: On December 27, former Chief Information Commissioner and presently National Minorities Commission Chairman and the Prime Minister's right hand man Wajahat Habibullah castigated the Indian Army and accused our soldiers of committing rapes in Kashmir. Actually he condemned former Army chief General VK Singh for his participation in the ongoing protests in Delhi over the gang-rape incident in a moving bus and accused him of watching rapes committed by his soldiers in Kashmir as a mute spectator. "In his (Gen Singh's) case, I am sorry to say so he was Commander-in-Chief of the Army. There are, at least in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, massive allegations of rape against Army. Were they ever inquired into? Was an effort made to bring justice? Here was a case of rape. Regrettable, yes. But if he wants to join in condemnation of the Government against that, has he taken into account various ramifications of that… It could be possible when Singh was the Army chief he was not able to remedy the cases although he may have wanted to. But that was even more reason to go to the Prime Minister, the Home Minister and tell them how to handle it," Habibullah, a great friend of Kashmiri separatists and votary of the State's division into five zones on purely communal lines, had shamelessly said. Gen Singh actually deserved bouquets and not bricks for his remarkable role he had been played as an Army chief, as also as a responsible and concerned citizen of the country after his superannuation on May 31, 2012. But Habibullah used the opportunity to lower the image of the Army by saying what he said. It must remain a matter of shame that the Indian State has put such persons at top positions, who exploit their official position to wreck the country from within by making outrageous statements which are in turn exploited by extremists like Syed Ali Shah Geelani to tarnish the image of the country and its institutions like the Army and judiciary. If what Habibullah said was extremely bad and derogatory, the indifference of the Defence Ministry to what he said was even worse. The Defence Ministry should have countered him then and there by setting the record straight and calling his bluff, but nothing of this sort happened. It adopted indifferent attitude despite the fact that the issue was very sensitive: Habibullah had attacked the institution of Army with a purpose and his purpose obviously was to paint this institution black and lower the morale of our soldiers who have been fighting splendidly against the anti-India forces in Kashmir and making supreme sacrifices for the defence of the country since October 27, 1947. The fact is that the Defence Ministry left the former Army chief General VK Singh with no option but to fend for himself. Yesterday, he tore into Habibullah and asked him to get his figures correct before talking non-sense. "I would like to ask him to get his figures correct and find out how many cases happened. If you don't know, then please don't make such general statements. In such circumstances, people should not make such statements," General Singh told reporters in New Delhi. What General Singh said in response to a media question should be construed as a big slap on the face of Habibullah, who has been consistently targeting the Army and paramilitary forces involved in anti-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and advocating for this State an independent dispensation on the ground that it is Muslim-majority. |
