NC loses its credibility by playing a foul game | Struggle for Kargil | | Neha JAMMU, Sept 12: NC working president and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his advisors damaged the party by not respecting the sane counsel of party president and Union Minister Farooq Abdullah that the NC must opt out of the race and allow the Congress to form autonomous hill development council in Kargil as the NC had lost the election. Had the Chief Minister respected the party president's advice and withdrawn the order under which the State Government nominated four persons to the council without the consent of the Congress party he would have regained the credibility he lost during his rule by various acts of omission and commission. But by going against the people's mandate and ignoring his father's sane counsel he and his Government have become objectives of ridicule to the extent that the JKPCC accused him of subverting all the cardinal principles of democracy and threatened a legal action against the NC. Reports suggest that the NC leadership has undertaken a damage-control exercise and befriend the alienated local Congress leadership and the Congress high command by withdrawing the order under which four persons were nominated to the council and agreeing to nominate two persons of the Congress's choice. The moment it is done, the Congress would be in a position to form the next council. The Congress already has the support of 14 councils, including three independent councilors. In case the State Government withdraws the controversial order and issue a new notification nominating four persons, two each for the NC and the Congress, the Congress would be in a position to form the council, as it will have on its side 16 councilors in the 30-member house. What has the NC gained by indulging in horse trading or purchasing the support of some independent councilors? It has not gained anything. In fact, it lost the game both morally and politically and created a situation that made its critics pounce upon the Chief Minister and his advisors and dismiss them as murderers of democracy and violators of the people's mandate. The critics of the NC cannot be questioned. They tore into the Chief Minister and his advisors when they took the Congress party for a ride and misused their official position to nominate four persons of their choice to grab the Kargil council. And after the withdrawal of the controversial notification, the critics of the NC would lambaste it saying the Chief Minister compromised his stand for the sake of personal power. Indeed, the Chief Minister played a bad politics and further offended the already angry electorate in Kargil. |
