Suspends 7 sports associations, issues show cause notices to 7 others | Sports Council shows some teeth | | Abodh Sharma JAMMU, Sept 12: At a time when Union Ministry of sports is grappling with the Indian Olympic Association to agree to the guidelines of the international Olympic committee, pending which India has temporarily been suspended from the Olympic charter, back home, the Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council is entangled in a battle with certain Sports Associations to make them comply with its guidelines. The Chief Sports Officer of the Council has issued a show cause notice to J&K Olympic Association, J&K Badminton Association, J&K Amateur Athletics Association, J&K Football Association, J&K Wrestling Association, J&K Archery Association and J&K India Style Wrestling Association through its letter no. Sc/844/1971-72 dated July 9, 2013, seeking an explanation as to why they elected the same office bearers for third consecutive term despite repeated direction from the Council in this regard. The communication of the CSO specifies that the J&K Olympic Association elected Rangil Singh and Ashutosh Sharma, J&K Badminton Association elected SS Wazir and OD Sharma, J&K Amateur Athletics Association elected Ravinder Singh and Rangil Singh, J&K Football Association elected Zamir Thakur and RK Kohli, J&K Wrestling Association elected Dushyant Sharma and Ajay Vaid, J&K Archery Association elected Sunil Sharma and J&K India Style Wrestling Association elected Shiv Kumar Sharma and Prithvi Raj Sharma as principal office bearers for more than two consecutive terms in contravention the Council guidelines, which restrain election of a person as principal office bearer in any sports association for more than two consecutive terms and more than three terms in all. In a notification issued by Secretary Sports Council on August 12, 2013 vide letter no. SC/202/2599-2606, the council has further restrained any person to hold any office in any sports association after he assumed age of 70. In another development, seven sports associations of the state have been suspended owing to their failure to submit their audited accounts for past several years despite repeated reminders. These associations are facing charges of not paying the sportspersons their dues after receiving grants from the Council. The associations suspended for non submission of their accounts include Basketball association which received grants of Rs. 68,400/-, 90,900/- and 46,500/- from 2001-2003, Amateur Roller skating association which received grants of Rs. 49,200/-,1,16,300/- and 6000/- from 1998-2000, Water Skiing association which received grants of 30,447/- and 12000/- from 2009-2010, Swimming association which received grant of Rs. 1,79,660/- and 75,585/- during 2007-2008, Winter Games association, which received Rs. 2,30,000/- in 2007-08, J&K Kayaking and Canoeing association which received Rs. 81,000/- from 2011-2012, Body Building association which received 2,29000/- during 2008-09 and Softball association which received over 3,32000/- during 2010-11. While the Sports Council has tried to bring accountability amongst the sports associations which have become hegemony of a few individuals who project themselves as the champions of the cause of sports in the State, Council has itself failed to do its bit to ensure compliance of its norms. While Council has objected to the elections of Zamir Thakur in Football association, Dushyant Sharma in Wrestling association and Rangil Singh in Olympic and Athletics association, it itself nominated them to the 29 member State Sports Council recently. |
