Mir's journey from a lawyer to Minister may end shortly | NC likely to press for his resignation | | Early Times Report new delhi, Sept 23: The Agriculture Minister, Ghulam Hassan Mir is the only member of his National Democratic Party but has managed an important portfolio in the state cabinet. Surprisingly, neither Congress nor NC need him because the coalition members have more than the required numbers to sustain the government. What, therefore, makes Mir so important? The questions has been haunting most of the Congress leaders includingVakil. A report in a reputed National Daily last week accused Mir of receiving funds to the tune of Rs 1.19 Crore to topple the coalition government headed by Omar Abdullah. Mir has strongly denied the allegations but the PDP has admitted that Mir sought party's support for assuming office of the Chief Minister in 2010. The PDP agreed to support him if Congress too supported him. However, according to PDP sources, he did not succeed in getting Congress on board. National Conference Additional General secretary, Dr Mustafa Kamaal also accused him of orchestrating killing of 13 persons in September 2010. He also accused him of burning of a Christian missionary school to push the coalition government to the wall. Mir has risen from an ordinary Tangmarg lawyer to the level of a minister. He joined NC in 1982 and then shifted loyalties to PDP and Congress before forming his own `one-man Jammu Kashmir National Democratic Party'. However, Mir is likely to face the axe in the coming days. The National Conference members are very angry and may demand his resignation to facilitate a fair and impartial inquiry into his involvement in toppling the government. "If Sajjad Kichloo can resign for Kishtwar violence, Mir too must resign to pave way for the enquiry," they said. |
