Militants appear in city centre, attack CISF personnel at Hazuri Bagh | One personnel killed, another one critically injured | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Sept 23: Militants appeared in a busy area in the summer capital of the state and carried out a lethal attack on Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel leading to the death of one personnel and serious injuries to other personnel. Eye witnesses while sharing details about the incident said that two militants carrying silencer pistols fired upon the CISF personnel at Hazuri Bagh while they were busy in buying vegetables outside the Naaz cinema building. The firing incident led to panic among the people present there and they ran helter-skelter in order to save their lives. "The incident occurred at 10:30 AM and in no time there was panic in the area with people running towards safer places. The firing took the CISF personnel by surprise and it took time for them to regain control in the area which was busy with shoppers. There was pandemonium in the area and everybody looked worried," said the eye witnesses. By the time police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel arrived at the scene the militants had fled and managed their escape from the site of the incident. Senior police and CRPF personnel took a stock of the situation emanating after the incident. Cordon and search operations were carried out in the Hazuri Bagh and adjacent areas in order to flush the militants but of no use. Militants fired from blank range on the CISF jawans and this caused grievous injuries to the two jawans of the force. The injured jawans were immediately removed to the hospital. One of the injured jawans succumbed to his injures on way to hospital while as the condition of other jawan is said to be critical in the hospital. It has been learnt that the CISF personnel were not carrying any arms while they were busy with purchases in the area. A police spokesman while giving details about the incident said that today in the morning two CISF personnel were attacked by some unknown militants near Naaz Crossing in Srinagar. Both of them were critically injured. The police spokesman said that Head constable D. Nayak son of Gopi Nath Nayak resident of Hatpora-Bansagadh, Balasore, Odisha succumbed to his injuries on way to the hospital. The police spokesman said the other personnel identified as Constable Mukesh Kumar son of Sher Singh resident of Bhalwa-Jamasat, Muzaffar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh is receiving treatment in the hospital. The police spokesman said that immediately after the incident senior police officers visited the spot and also the hospital. He added that Police have registered a case and investigations have been started to nab the militants who carried out the attack. A local news agency reported that Hizbul Mujahideen has claimed responsibility of the attack on the CISF personnel. This is the second major attack of the militants since June 24, when militant killed eight soldiers at Hyderpora and causing injuries to more than one dozen soldiers. Last week militants carried out an attack on the army convoy near Sanat Nagar crossing however no one was injured or killed in the firing incident. Meanwhile, Army today claimed to have foiled an infiltration bid near line of control in North Kashmir's Kupwara sector. An army official said that army challenged a group of heavily armed militants in Machil sector but the militants retaliated triggering an encounter. The army official said that one militant has been killed so far during the encounter. |
