Demoralizing defeats push political parties on sticky wicket | | | Shakeel A Khan SRINAGAR, June 26: Alarmed by the demoralizing defeat of the NC- Congress alliance, the political parties in J&K are in the state of caution as each of them has ruled out pre poll alliance; however, despite the public wrath in recently held Parliamentary elections, both NC and Congress would continue to hold hands lest they are washed away in another wave of public fury. Since 2002, no party in J&K has been able to form the Government on its own. During the last two elections as those of 2002 and 2008, the political scenario of the state has changed altogether, which made the two big political forces of the state as Pradesh Congress committee and National Conference to bow before little known entities to form the Government. But it is the fact that whichever coalition came into power, it is the commoner who suffered for want of the efficient governance. In fact the coalition, which is in power can easily be termed as the worst of them all as per the opinion of the people of the State. "Whether the Government was weak or strong, single party Government or coalition, it is the commoner who suffered as nothing people centric was done during the last 20 years or so. As a result of which, commoners have lost faith in the people who have been at the helm of affairs from time to time," said some people at Srinagar while talking to Early Times. According to these people, there was no hate or love of the people for the political parties in 2002 Assembly elections. It was only because of the poor performances of the National Conference leaders that the people voted against them. 2002 election was a nightmare for NC as many upsets took place in that election. People were so disheartened that even the darling of the Sheikh dynasty, lost the political battle to the little known Qazi Afzal. "Ganderbal, which was once a bastion of the National Conference and where people swore by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, virtually turned into a graveyard for the party and surrendered its fort to the People’s Democratic Party. After that NC could never settle down infact this party passing through the dark times," said Syed Hafifullah from Ganderbal while talking to Early Times. Hafeez was of the opinion that the National Conference had sown the seeds of its destruction during the year of 1987 wherein it denied the people of a political change. According to Hafeez, unable to digest the uprising of Muslim United Front (MUF). The NC adopted the policy of revenge and oppression and the result is in front of all.
