What lies beneath Omar's knee jerk responses to Congress' decision! | NC-Congress divorce | | Jammu, July 20: Contrary to the tweets of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah following formal announcement of Congress leadership to dissolve the six year old coalition it had with the National Conference, sources divulge that the Congress high command didn't concede to the request of the Chief Minister on pre-poll alliance, though he had pleaded and pitched strongly for it. The high command had dropped enough signals to him and then finally decided to take a call. Senior Congress leaders, wishing not to be named, said contrary to what Omar is tweeting, the fact is he was desperate to stitch and alliance. Sources said the alliance would have benefited Omar much more than the Congress. "He knows NC is sliding fast in Kashmir and it would have been difficult for him to catch up with the PDP. He needed an alliance to stay afloat and it would have helped him a great deal. But Congress had its own take ," said the senior Congress leader. The party high command was told by the State leadership that Congress had not benefited working with the Omar who had opposed every demand of the party be it panchayat election or issues of refugees. It had given an impression to the voters that the party can't stand up on its own and it was one of the reason why voters drifted away from it in the Parliamentary elections as they wanted especially in Jammu region to stand up for their voice and it benefitted BJP. The Congress believes that even after some reverses in the Parliamentary elections, party did have chance to emerge as the single largest party and for it needs to snap ties with the NC especially with Omar Abdullah as he had consistently showed his opposition to the interests of the Jammu region. "Omar had tried to project himself as a custodian of the rights of the people of the Kashmir and for it raised issues of Accession, used and exploited BJP and then even resented granting of IIT to Jammu. He has now a public history of anti-Jammu feeling. It would have been suicidal to go with him though he tried every trick in the trade to convince party high command, which had already faulted by giving him six-year, and didn't want repeat it," said the senior leader. |
