Cong rank and file prevails upon its leadership to get alliance dissolved

Kunal Shrivatsa

JAMMU, July 20: The Congress finally succumbed to pressure from its rank and file that was pressing hard upon its leadership to part ways with its alliance partner and formally called off its relationship with National Conference.
Congress leadership led by General Secretary All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Incharge J&K Ambika Soni, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad today announced that party will go solo in the Assembly polls due later this year and will not enter into any pre-poll alliance.
It was quite apparent after the General Elections that the party leadership would not be able to stretch its association with the NC since the Congress workers and leaders were not very keen to contest the recently held Parliamentary elections in partnership with the NC albeit the party High Command refused to relent to the demand and went into the polls in alliance. The rank and file of Congress had no other choice but to obey the directive of the party High Command and they went into poll arena with a half hearted effort.
However, in the Lok Sabha polls both the alliance partners had to eat humble pie as they drew blank in their respective strongholds of Jammu and Kashmir provinces.
With a changed political scenario in the state in particular and country in general the demand of severing ties with the NC grew wider and the grass root level party activists as well as middle and senior level party leaders conveyed in plain terms to party leadership that it would be suicidal for the party to continue the alliance with NC.
The frame of mind in which the Congress workers were in was clearly spelled by Ambika Soni while responding to queries of the media persons in a press conference held here today.
Soni had to admit that the decision to end the alliance with NC came after taking into consideration the wishes and aspirations of the party workers.
"After extensive talks with Congress leaders and workers at all levels, the party has come to the conclusion that we are going to fight the forthcoming Assembly elections on our own strength," Soni said, adding "Most of the workers and leaders of Congress wanted us to go alone in elections."
Soni further said that the votes in Lok Sabha elections were not transferred to each other resulting in the debacle, adding, "There was not much of help that came from our alliance partner in previous election."
Sensing the mood of the party workers, it had become unbecoming for the grand old party to withstand the demand and it had no other option but to bow before the wishes of rank and file of the party which resulted in calling it quits the six year long relationship with the NC.
