Despite Rahul-Omar bonhomie; NC-Cong alliance doomed | Assembly Elections-2014 | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 20: Despite Rahul-Omar being close friends in public, National Conference (NC)-Congress alliance has finally got doomed with Congress deciding to field candidates from all the 87 Assembly segments of Jammu and Kashmir. To prevent NC from making backroom moves, Congress announced the decision in a high profile press conference addressed by Congress incharge for Jammu and Kashmir Ambika Soni, ex-Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and JKPCC President Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz. By addressing the press conference in Asia Hotel alongwith Ambika Soni, Azad and Soz gave a clear indication of having mended fences for the upcoming Assembly elections. The unanimous decision, according to sources has the backing of Congress President Sonia Gandhi. They added that the decision was taken after intense deliberations of the trio (Soni, Soz and Azad) with Sonia Gandhi, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and Ahmed Patel, the political secretary to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. Sources disclosed that the trio outrightly told the high command about the extremely weak position of NC across the state. They informed the high command that National Conference (NC) had got completely eroded from the political landscape of Kashmir valley during the last five and a half years, said the sources. And any pre-poll alliance with NC would be detrimental to interests of party in Jammu region besides influencing outcome in around 12 to 14 constituencies of Kashmir valley where Congress is in direct contest with PDP, the trio is believed to have told high command. Referring to south Kashmir, sources said the party leadership has told the high command that in most of the constituencies, Congress is locked in straight contest with PDP and there is negligible presence of NC. They have further said that Congress is strong on around 8 seats of North and Central Kashmir where again it is in straight contest with PDP. Sources maintained that when the high command put the idea of strategic alliance proposed by NC before the trio, they unanimously said that there was no need of such an alliance since it would result in extreme consolidation of minority votes in Jammu region, the way it happened during the recently held Lok Sabha elections. The trio separately informed the Congress president Sonia Gandhi about NC facing strong anti-incumbency across the state. "Even we would be swept away if we go into any kind of alliance with NC. Strategic or Pre-poll alliance with NC would be disastrous for the party. Let them bear the brunt of anti-incumbency since it is against their inability to govern effectively and not against out ministers and leaders who were ignored time and again by the NC-led coalition government," is what the trio has reportedly told Congress President. Sources further said that National Conference (NC) did make all possible efforts to keep the ship afloat but failed miserably. They added that NC announced a list of around 32 candidates recently leaving several constituencies where Congress is considered strong behind and kept waiting for Congress response to their proposal for strategic alliance. However, Congress decided otherwise and announced the decision to contest the upcoming assembly elections all alone. The decision, according to insiders had been communicated to NC leadership much before the press conference addressed by the trio. They added that NC leadership which is represented had expressed deep disgust over decision of Congress to field candidates in all the 87 constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir. |
