Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Jan 15: As the Jammu and Kashmir police is busy in observing the 26th road safety week, there is no change in the ground situation and the fatal accident on Baramulla-Srinagar road is the testimony to this fact. Each year the Jammu and Kashmir police observes road safety weak but as a matter of fact, there has been an alarming rise in the deadly accidents, consuming precious lives.
People of the valley generally believe that there is lack of enthusiasm in the police personnel manning the traffic. Observing road safety week alone is not going to help the cause of zero tolerance with regard to the accidents that take place almost on the daily basis.
"There is lack of seriousness on part of the concerned authorities to tackle erring drivers. Traffic police personnel remain missing at most of the places which witness a huge rush of vehicles often resulting in the grid lock. It poses a serious threat to the lives of the people around these places," said Farhan from Jehangir Chowk.
He opined that the drivers try to jump over each other in violation of the traffic rules that too under the nose of the authorities. Srinagar city is the living example to this. The irony is that the concerned authorities have failed to streamline the traffic in the summer capital of the valley not to talk about the far off places, Farhan went on saying.
The traffic signals which were installed by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation have gone out of order at most of the points across Srinagar city either on account of the technical failure or for the reasons of power breakdown. It has made the problem a complex one instead of solving it.
"In the absence of the traffic signals and the traffic police, the drivers have become troublesome who breach the traffic rules. They neither respect the red signal nor wait for the green one. They seem to be in hurry for no reasons, to get past each other come what the result may be," said Assadullah from Bemina.
As per Assadullah, the only thing which was done over the years by the government was that an over-bridge was constructed at Jehangir Chowk which unfortunately serves no purpose. Since there are no fly-overs at the Bemina crossing, Shalteng, Dumel, Rawalpora and many other crossing points, have turned into the death traps for the commoners, said Assadullah.
