Omar clips Kamaal's wings, asks media to ignore his statements

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Jan 15: The National Conference (NC) has censured its additional general secretary, Shiekh Mustafa Kamaal over issuing what the party terms 'problematic' statements to the press.
Kamaal, who is the son of NC founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, hogged the front page of local dailies during the six-year coalition rule led by his nephew, Omar Abdullah by his jaw dropping statements. Kamaal at various occasions accused Congress of being responsible for the killing of NC workers during the past turmoil and sometimes he went to the extent of declaring United Nations resolutions on Kashmir as relevant at present.
His most troubling statement for his nephew was the one which he made earlier last year, declaring that his party is ready to support Modi government, if latter wins the parliament polls. The much perturbed Omar Abdullah, who happened to be close to Congress at that time, had to declare open support to the Congress party for Lok Sabha elections. Kamaal was also the first one who revealed to press that Omar Abdullah will not contest from his family bastion Ganderbal during state elections. Omar later had to rebuke Kamaal, saying his uncle must take care and think about his own constituency and not about his nephew's.
Kamaal, in the recent past, when his party was yet to retain conscience after the poll drubbing shock, snubbed the separatist leaders for interfering in the matters related to the government formation in JK. He also stated that separatist leaders including Geelani must not poke his nose in such issues which are not his domain.
The red faced former chief minister, Omar Abdullah, according to sources, has personally made phone calls to some valley based dailies, requesting them not to carry any statement coming out from the table of uncle Kamaal.
Sources privy to this development also revealed that Omar along with his close aides held closed door meetings with some journalists in Kashmir valley recently, asking them to avoid any statement issued by Kamaal.
Sources added that Omar also directed NC spokesman Junaid Matoo to declare only the statements of provincial presidents and spokesman authentic for the publication in press.
Reports informed that since poll defeat, NC is mulling to remain in good books of the separatist leaders and the statements like that of Kamaal's would only act as spoilsport in the process.
Kamaal, according to party sources, has expressed his anguish in open before the party, accusing his nephew of preferring new comers and ignoring party veterans within the national conference.
A senior NC leader while pleading anonymity told this newspaper that Kamaal has also expressed his resentment before his brother and Omar's father D Farooq Abdullah about what he termed 'incorrigible' activities taking place within the national conference. "It is only Dr Abdullah whose efforts are keeping Kamaal in the party, otherwise he has been a long ago ignored by both his nephew and party," reveals the party leader.
Kamaal has served in the state cabinets formed in 1983, 1987 and 1996. After 2008 polls, when NC along with Congress formed coalition in JK, Kamaal was out rightly ignored by Omar Abdullah and wasn't even considered for any ministerial berth.
