4 local militants among 5 killed in Shopian encounter | First major success to forces in 2015 | | Javaid Naikoo Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jan 15: Five militants including four locals were gunned down by security forces in a day long gun battle in South Kashmir as army said that 200 militants were waiting to sneak int this side of Kashmir. Describing it a major success, a police spokesman said 5 militants were killed in an encounter with police and security forces in Gadder forests in Keller area of South Kashmir's Shopian District today. He said that on a tip off, Shopian police along with 44RR and CRPF launched a search operation in forest area of Gadder in the jurisdiction of police station Kellar this morning and during the searches militants present in the forest fired upon the joint search team, triggering an encounter in which five militants were killed and from their possession 3 AK rifles, one SLR rifle and one pistol has were recovered. According to locals, the slain militants have been identified and four among them are locals namely Shakeel Ahmad from Pakherpora of Budgam District, Tahir Ahmad from Aglar of Pulwama District, Parvaiz Hussain from Batamuran of Shopian and Ishfaq Ahmad Dagga from Arwani area of Kulgam Distrcit while as fifth militant killed is a foreigner, most probably from Pakistan. Meanwhile army today said militants may target schools, religious places and military convoys in Kashmir ahead of US president Barack Obama's visit to India later this month. General Officer Commanding (GOC), 16 Corps, Lt Gen K H Singh said that 200 heavily-armed militants are waiting in 36 launching pads across LoC and there is every possibility that Pakistan might try to divert the fringe elements of the home grown terrorist outfits on this side of the border. "There are general inputs that terrorists might try to attack soft targets, including schools, religions places, army convoys and other civilian areas," he said. He said that army is fully prepared to foil any such nefarious designs of militant outfits and added that the terror infrastructure across the border is active and terrorist organizations are receiving support of Pakistani establishment including the army and ISI. Singh said that there are 14 to 15 terrorists training camp active on the other side of the line of control within our area of responsibility and as terrorist infrastructure across the border is intact, there is every possibility that Pakistan might try to divert some of its home grown terrorists towards this side of the border. He said that there could probably be a possibility that some disgruntled elements of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan might surrender to the Pakistani Army, which can be used to launch attacks against India and added that less than two months ago the chief of banned group Lashkar-e-Toiba, Hafiz Saed, was reported to have visited the areas along the border in Pakistan to motivate his cadre to launch anti-India attacks. Pertinently in Kashmir today's encounter in Shopian is the second encounter in 2015 as one militant was killed in Sopore Wednesday.
