Senseless opposition in Kashmir angers Jammu | Government formation | | Rustam Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 15: The senseless opposition in Kashmir to the formation of the PDP-led coalition government with the BJP or the BJP-led coalition government with the PDP has created anarchy in the state, led to the imposition of the Governor's Rule and angered the people of Jammu province. (The PDP and the BJP share between them 53 seats in the 87-member assembly.) The point is that all the separatists, almost all the Kashmiri commentators and so-called members of Kashmiri civil society and the defeated parties like the NC and the Congress have been expressing themselves against the demand in Jammu province for the formation of the BJP-led or BJP-supported government, as also against the demand that the Chief Minister of the state should be from Jammu since December 23. The upshot of their whole argument is that since Jammu & Kashmir is a Muslim-majority State, the Chief Minister has to be a Kashmiri Muslim like before and that there will be a "revolt" in the Valley in case the BJP-led government or the BJP-supported government is installed in the state or a Hindu Chief Minister from Jammu is "imposed" on the state. The proportion of Kashmiri Muslims and Jammu Hindus is approximately 60:40 with almost 10 out of 22 districts are non-Muslim-majority. They, in short, have been clamouring for a dispensation that rigorously excludes the BJP and Jammu province and further perpetuates the Kashmiri domination over the state's polity and economy and that is designed to facilitate and further perpetuate the domination and exploitation of the people of Jammu province and Ladakh region. It's no wonder then that the people of Jammu province are chaffing and seething with anger with more radical of them threatening to launch an agitation calculated to achieve the status of statehood for Jammu. It is a positive development that the PDP rejected out-of-hand the NC's offer of "unconditional" support to it from outside, saying that "the Governor's rule is better than an alliance with the NC", that the "NC is trying to seek power through backdoor" and that the proposal of the NC, if accepted, would mean negation of the 2014 mandate. This rejection not only means a rebuff to the opportunistic, power-hungry and irresponsible NC, but it also means an indication that the PDP has not given up the idea of working with the BJP, which has just three seats less than the PDP in the assembly. The tone and tenor of the PDP spokesperson Nayeem Akhtar clearly suggested that there is the possibility of the PDP and the BJP working together. However, the most significant development that has unfolded in Jammu province in the wake of the political deadlock over the government formation, plus the opposition in Kashmir to the suggestion that the BJP must be a part of the state government and the Chief Minister of the state should be from Jammu, is the demand in Jammu for the state's trifurcation. The "secular" BSP has openly said that trifurcation of the state is the only option available for the people of Jammu province, as the status of statehood for Jammu alone could end the Kashmiri domination and hegemony over the state polity and economy and bring the SCs, STs, OBCs and similar other groups at par with their counterparts in the rest of the country. The BSP, which was stung by the opposition in Kashmir to the recommendation of the joint parliamentary committee that refugees from West Pakistan be granted citizenship rights, made this demand a couple of days ago, saying the time has come for the state's trifurcation. And on January 14, the newly-founded Jammu Pradesh United Front (JPUF) urged the people of Jammu province to come on to one platform to fight for the Jammu cause like the Kashmiri parties, Kashmiri social groups, Kashmiri separatists, Kashmiri intellectual class, the Kashmir Bar Association and so on have been fighting for the so-called Kashmir cause. "The people of Jammu Pradesh should learn from Omar Abdullah that how he dared to give an unconditional support to the PDP instead of BJP cutting across his party lines for the cause of Kashmir. It is high time now for the people of Jammu province to get united and fight for their rights leaving behind their petty interests to secure the future of the forthcoming generations," the JPUF said. Interestingly, the JPUF has been indirectly supporting the BJP, saying it would fight against the BJP in case it failed to give a Chief Minister from Jammu. The fact of the day is that all or almost all in Jammu province are of the view that the time for separation from Kashmir has finally come and that it would be a crime in case they remained dormant or devoid of any political activity any longer. Such is the nature of the anger of the people of Jammu province and it's the hostile attitude of the communal forces and anti-Jammu elements in the Valley that has created a volatile situation in Jammu. |
