Delhi assembly polls impact Government formation in J&K as BJP decides to play safe | State all set to witness Governor Rule for next one month | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 15: The upcoming elections for the Delhi assembly have impacted the formation of the next government in Jammu & Kashmir since the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) does not want to lose out some of the seats in the union capital if it goes ahead with formation of government as on date. Sources told Early Times that top leadership of BJP has decided not to go ahead with the dialogue process with Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the time being for forming the next government in the state. The decision has been taken in order to avoid controversy that may arise if BJP and PDP form an alliance with respect to the formation of next government in the state. "It is quite natural that BJP would have to give in on some of the issues that they have been raising with respect to the position of Jammu & Kashmir. BJP has been maintaining that it would like to get the Article 370 abrogated from the state, but the same has been opposed by the leading mainstream parties of the state including PDP," said sources. Sources said that if BJP forms a government with PDP with compromise on Article 370 at this point of time then it may go against them during the Delhi elections. Since the Delhi elections are being keenly watched, the BJP would not like to lose out to form government in the Delhi state. "BJP is facing a challenge from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi and they would not like to take chances in such a scenario. As such the party has for the time being shelved the dialogue process with PDP for forming the government in the state. This would lead to further delay in the government formation and the process may pick up pace only after February 7," said sources. After the declaration of results of the assembly elections in the state on December 23 both BJP and PDP have been engaged in both informal and formal dialogue with regard to the government formation. Although, both the parties have been maintaining a cautious approach in this regard but it is quite clear that they were in talking terms in this regard. Only on Sunday last PDP's legislator from Rajpora assembly seat Haseeb Drabu met BJP's President Amit Shah and party's National General Secretary Ram Madhav at New Delhi. Drabu was also set to carry out further dialogue with Ram Madhav and Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, but this could not materialize since Jaitley was not available for the meeting. "In the first instance the BJP leaders said that Jaitley was not available for the meeting, but later on it came to be known that the party has decided to wait for the time being with regard to government formation in the state. The decision has been conveyed to the PDP leadership and the state would witness the Governor rule at least for the next one month," said sources. PDP has emerged as the largest party in the state after the recent assembly elections with 28 seats followed by BJP with 25 seats. National Conference has 15 legislators in the new assembly with Congress winning 12 seats in the elections. Independents and others have managed to win seven seats. |
