Revolt against Balwant Singh Mankotia | Association with JPUF | | Rustam
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 18: The Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) is in complete disarray. Its three top leaders - Bhim Singh (chief patron), Balwant Singh Mankotia (president) and others are pulling in different directions. Bhim Singh is openly opposing the idea of the PDP and the BJP joining hands to form the next government in the state and urging Governor NN Vohra to dissolve the Assembly and recommend fresh elections. Another leader, who earlier had appealed to the non-BJP MLAs to vote against the BJP and the PDP candidates seeking election to the Rajya Sabha, has also been airing views which suit the NC and the Congress, which, like the JKNPP, were also rejected by the electorate. The JKNPP suffered the worst ever defeat in the 2014 Assembly elections in the sense that it could not even open its account. In 2002, it had won four seats and in 2008, it had captured three seats of Ramnagar, Udhampur and Samba. The people rejected Balwant Singh Mankotia who from time to time played an active role in the Legislative Assembly. As for Balwant Singh Mankotia, state president of the party, he is treading a path different from the one being treaded by Bhim Singh. Mankotia, who on January 9 became chairman of the Jammu Pradesh United Front (JPUF) - a conglomerate of 15 smaller political groups - has been taking active part in the activities of the JPUF. The JPUF was formed on January 9 to achieve four immediate objectives - Chief Minister from Jammu, abrogation of Article 370, citizenship rights for West Pakistan refugees and make the BJP to includes Jammu-specific issues in the common minimum programme to be devised by the BJP and the PDP. The JPUF to date has held two dharnas in order to achieve its stated goals and threatened that it would intensify its activities in the coming days to defend and promote further the Jammu cause. The other leaders of the JKNPP should have joined hands with the JPUF considering the fact that it was floated to further the Jammu cause, but it has not happened. But has happened is to the contrary. A number of senior JKNPP leaders have opposed the association of Balwant Singh Mankotia with the JPUF. In fact, on February 15, when an "important" meeting of the Working Committee of the JKNPP was held former minister, Balwant Singh Mankotia was attacked for his association with the JPUF. The attack was launched by JKNPP advisor Bansi Lal Sharma and he was supported by many members of the working committee. Bansi Lal accused those from the JKNPP who became part of the JPUF of "diluting" the JKNPP and said the JKNPP leadership should take lead in strengthening the movement for the reorganization of Jammu & Kashmir, instead of associating with what he called the "so-called JPUF".The manner in which some top JKNPP leaders are conducting themselves and opposing Balwant Singh Mankotia doesn't augur well for the party. They need to speak in one voice and work for the promotion of the Jammu cause with a single-minded devotion. |
