Two independents hold key to NC Candidate's win from Kashmir | LC Polls | | Party starts back channel efforts to woo Tarigami, Hakim Early Times Report jammu, Feb 18: As the scene about upcoming Legislative Council elections got clearer with filing of nomination papers on the last day today, National Conference has started back channel efforts to ensure votes of at least two independent candidates in their favour for its lone contender in Kashmir province whose victory entirely depends on their support. National Conference has fielded Qaiser Jamsheed Lone from Kashmir province and Sajjad Ahmad Kitchloo from Jammu province. The latter is safe as per the number of votes required for his victory. Sources said the party high command has directed second rung leaders to begin talks with CPI(M) MLA MY Tarigami and PDF president Hakim Mohammad Yasin, the two independent candidates who hold key in ensuring victory of Qaiser Jamshed Lone from Kashmir province. Pertinently, each contender from Kashmir Valley needs 44 votes for victory whereas for Jammu contenders for any party only 18 votes are required for sailing through the victory path. While as NC candidate from Jammu with support of Congress has full numbers which will ensure his victory, for Kashmir seat NC falls short of just two seats which is why the party is heavily dependent upon the two independent veterans. Sources said some leaders have started back channel efforts to keep both the veteran politicians by their side at the time of polling on March two. Both Hakim and Tarigami are camping in winter capital for over a month now. " We are also ensuring the two stay here till the elections and do not raise any reasons for abstaining ……their votes are very crucial ", said a senior NC leader contending even though the party is sure both these leaders would neither support BJP nor PDP ( as both have been openly opposing their alliance in government formation), yet the party leadership doesn't want to take any chance. "If we fail to woo them and ensure their support, we will lose this seat which is very important in terms of NC's strength in the Upper House…", the NC leader said. However, both Tarigami and Hakim Yasin have not yet opened up their cards or the strategy they would follow this time for voting in Legislative Assembly even as they had openly supported Ghulam Nabi Azad of Congress in the Rajya Sabha polls recently which ensured his win in the last minute hectic political lobbying. If the two independents decide their strategy which goes against NC (either by not voting in its favour or even by abstaining), the seat would conveniently go into PDP's kitty, a calculation which is worrying more to NC high command. As per the number game, PDP is all set to win five out of 11 seats for which the elections are being held on March 2. |
