6 months on, CM's monitoring cell defunct | Officials draw hefty salaries for doing nothing | | Arun Singh Early Times Report jammu, Feb 18: The Chief Minister Monitoring Cell, which had been set up by the former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to monitor the ongoing major infrastructural projects across the state, is lying defunct since September 2014 due to no government being at place. Sources told Early Times that the Chief Minister Monitoring Cell was established in August 2010 to monitor the progress of the major projects being undertaken across the state to ensure that these projects are completed within the stipulated deadline. "The Monitoring Cell is defunct since September 2014 as none of the projects were inspected by the Cell thereafter," sources said adding that the work on most of the projects came to a standstill due to flash floods last year and many under construction projects were submerged in the deluge. Later when conditions improved in the state nearly after a month, Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was imposed in the state due to general assembly elections which were due in November-December 2014. "With the imposition of MCC, no inspection of project was conducted by the officials of Monitoring Cell as the Cell was directly under Chief Minister so with the absence of active government, Cell could not inspect projects," they added. On the one hand the officials in the Cell are without work for the last six months which is defeating the objective of setting up of the Cell and on the other hand government is paying huge salaries to the officials and other staff members of the Cell for doing nothing causing loss to state exchequer," they alleged. Sources informed that the functioning of Cell would remain suspended till the new government is formed and the Cell is taken over by the new Chief Minister who is by default the head of the Cell.
