Sagar couldn't see his son on top | Salman's uneventful stint as Mayor, Dr Farooq contesting LS polls in 2009 dashed Sr Sagar's hopes | | Fazal Khan Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 18: The incumbent General Secretary of the National Conference Ali Mohammad Sagar left no stone unturned to project his son Salman Sagar as his successor but all his attempts couldn't yield the desired results. Salman Sagar became the Mayor of Srinagar City on Mar 26, 2008 with the blessings and backing of his father Ali Mohammad Sagar, who as then senior leader of the National Conference used to call the shots. However, Salman as Mayor couldn't do much and remained busy in ensuring that he gets wide publicity and people come to know that he is not just a son of "influential father" but has an identity of his own. Salman's stint as a Mayor was not that eventful as his recognition remained confined to being the son of an "influential politician" who managed to push his son to the top post despite NC being in opposition in 2008. Recalling the 2008 elections for Mayor's post in Srinagar one of the former NC corporators while talking to Early Times said, "Sixty-one out of 63 corporators voted in the elections. While three votes were rejected, Salman bagged 44 votes, while his rival PDP candidate Abdul Rehman, got 14 votes. At that point of time there were 37 NC corporators, six were from Congress and four were independents." "A few days before the elections for Mayor's post Ali Mohammad Sagar summoned all the NC corporators and told them strictly that they have to vote for his son and if they fail to toe the party's official line their political careers would come to an end," the former NC corporator said. He said that Sagar spoke to all the corporators individually and made them understand that his son's victory is very important for him. "We were left with no other choice other than to vote for Salman as he was imposed on us by the party leadership and none of us wanted to annoy Sagar sahib as he promised us that he would help us in future," the former corporator added. "Many of us were not in favour of voting for Salman as we had no faith in his capabilities and believed that he is too immature to handle a responsible post but we had no other choice other than to follow the dikats of senior Sagar as he was desperate to launch his son," he claimed. He said as Mayor Salman hardly found "anytime for his corporators" and issues related to city. Ali Mohammad Sagar succeeded in launching his son but he couldn't provide a "big breakthrough" to his son as National Conference-Congress regime failed to hold municipal elections from 2009 to 2014 end. In April 2009, Ali Mohammad Sagar, according to the sources, prevailed upon the party patron Dr Farooq Abdullah and made him announce that if he (Dr Farooq) decides against contesting the Lok Sabha polls, Salman would be the party's candidate from central Kashmir's Srinagar-Budgam parliamentary constituency. Both Dr Farooq and Salman Sagar filed their nominations for the Sgr-Budgam parliamentary seat and Ali Muhammad Sagar till the last moment was sure that Dr Farooq would allow his son to try his luck but contrary to Sagar's expectations the NC patron decided to jump into the poll fray following which Salman had to withdraw his nomination papers. Another attempt of father Ali Mohammad Sagar to secure a job for his son backfired. "From 2009 to 2013 Ali Mohammad Sagar made all the possible attempts to somehow make Salman re-enter the political arena of Jammu and Kashmir but couldn't do much as his party's working president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah showed little interest to encourage junior Sagar," said a source In November 2013 Ali Mohammad Sagar somehow managed to get his son Salman Sagar appointed as the Provincial president of Youth National Conference. However, NC's recent defeat in the assembly polls has once again dashed the hopes of the NC General Secretary to see his son settled. He (Ali Mohammad Sagar) may have to wait for six more years to see his son get a stable job. |
