Udhampur gets a berth in council of ministers after 53 years | | | Bivek Mathur Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 2 : With the formation of BJP-PDP coalition government, Udhampur constituency also got representation in the council of ministers after more than 50 years. Pawan Kumar Gupta, the expelled BJP leader who contested LA elections independently and won from Udhampur assembly segment by bagging 36226 votes against 21576 votes bagged by National Panthers Party's Balwant Singh Mankotia was declared Minister of State (MoS) along with 17 cabinet ministers and 8 Minister of states in the Mufti led coalition government. Pawan Kumar Gupta being inducted into the council of ministers is a monumental moment for the people of Udhampur assembly constituency as they are witnessing their elected representative getting a ministerial birth after a long gap of 53 years. According to senior Congress leader Brij Mohan Sharma, it was Amarnath Sharma of National Conference from Udhampur assembly segment who defeated Paras Ram of Praja Parishad (PP) in the general election of 1962 bagging 8003 votes against 7815 votes bagged by Paras Ram when NC got a total of 70 seats (65% vote share) and Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad was the Chief Minister when Amarnath Sharma was inducted in the state cabinet of 1962 as Housing and Urban Development Minister. Pawan Kumar Gupta, while sharing his happiness with Early Times said that he is feeling privileged to be appointed as a minister in the 12th assembly from Udhampur constituency after 53 years of history which he termed as an opportunity to serve the people of the state in general and Udhampur constituency in particular. Gupta further said that his shoulders are ready to bear the burden of the state rather than a constituency and will strive hard to eradicate the menace of corruption and explore new dimensions of development in the state. As far as Udhampur constituency is concerned, Gupta said that for the last 12 years, growth has come to a halt in the town as according to him, roads are in dilapidated conditions, hospitals and dispensaries are running short of staff, government schemes are not reaching the actual beneficiaries. "I will make every possible effort to put everything on track so that a transparency is maintained in government departments", said Gupta. |
