All eyes on Mufti as how to clean 'rotten' system | As GAD fails to sanction prosecution against corrupt officials' transparency takes a hit | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Mar 4: Corrupt and tainted officers posted in state bureaucracy and police are on toes after the recent announcement of Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that corruption would be weeded out from the state. Addressing his maiden press conference after assuming the office of CM for the second time, Mufti said that stern action would be taken against the corrupt officials. Cases of corruption are pending against dozens of officers and despite it they continue to be enjoying plum postings in the different government departments. The previous government headed by Omar Abdullah failed to act against the corrupt officials and as such they continued to resort to malpractices in the departments they were posted. As hundreds of cases are pending against officers and officials at State Vigilance Organization, State Vigilance Commission and State Accountability Commission it remains to be seen how the new state government will act in this respect. Sources told Early Times that after Mufti's announcement to act tough against corrupt officials the tainted are looking for ways and means in order to avoid the stern action. They want to be in good books of the chief minister and as such would want that all their bad records are written off from the record books. "There are many cases where General Administration Department has failed to sanction for the prosecution of the tainted officials. With the chief minister holding the charge of GAD as well it can be expected that this process would be speeded up and sanction would be accorded to the prosecution of tainted officials," said sources. Sources said failure of GAD in the past has given a feeling to the corrupt officials that even if cases are filed against them, still then they would be able to run away Scott free. With SAC also turning defunct over the years these corrupt officials have been making merry at the cost of causing trouble to the common masses. "There are cases where First Information Reports (FIRs) are lodged against the corrupt officials but still then the sanction is awaited from the GAD. When everything has been proved against the corrupt officials, one fails to understand the delay in prosecution of the tainted and corrupt officials of the state," said sources. Sources said that there are chances that SAC would once again be made functional. This would lead to a situation where-in action is taken not only against the corrupt officials but also corrupt politicians as well. Otherwise, it has been observed that politicians manage to run away even after being involved in different scams and scandals. "Politicians are the public representatives and they need to be accounted for the actions carried out by them. If they resort to any loot or plunder it is necessary that action is taken against them. The best way in this regard is to make the SAC functional while giving it the necessary powers," said sources. |
