Kupwara locals stage protest against shortage of drinking water | | | Early Times Report
kupwara, Mar 5: Kandi, Nutnussa and Deedkoot Vilgam villages in frontier district Kupwara protested against shortage of drinking water in their villages on Wednesday. The protestors including women and children blocked Kupwara-Srinagar road for traffic near Nutsussa village for about two hours on Wednesday till afternoon. Amid slogans against PHE for failing to ensure water supply to the villages, the protestors demanded early restoration of regular supply of drinking water. The protestors alleged that for past two weeks the taps have gone dry but the concerned authorities are least bothered to restore the water supply. “In absence of water supply, we are forced to walk miles to fetch water from a nullah. Due to incessant rains during past few days, we are left with no option but to consume contaminated water from open conventional water source in area,” said Shaheena Begum, a housewife one of the protestors. Protestors also said that they had visited the office of Executive Engineer Public Health Engineering with the request to restore supply to the village on Saturday but all assurances went in vain.Altaf Ahmad, another protestor from Kandi also said the women folk are forced to walk over a mile to fetch a bucket of water in ongoing inclement weather. Meanwhile Executive Engineer PHE Ghulam Qadir Bhat in a telephonic conversation said that due to incessant rains the field staff has failed to restore the supply. He however assured as soon weather permits we will restore the supply within 3-4 hours. |
