Need to avoid controversial issues for smooth conduct of Govt | For the sake of political stability | | Rustam Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 5: Things in the state are not moving in the right direction. What is making the already rather complicated situation in the state further complicated is the focus of the state government, headed by the PDP, on emotive issues. The result is that things are deteriorating in Jammu, where the people, cutting across party lines, are expressing serious concern over what has happened during the last four days. During the last four days, four developments took place which didn't go well with many people not only in Jammu province and Ladakh region but also across the country with the entire national media highlighting the implications as far as the internal and external security of the country, including its Kashmir, is concerned. These four developments include (1) the controversial suggestion that had Pakistan, Hurriyat and militants not extended their support to the democratic process in the state, the 2014 assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir would not have been a smooth affair and there would not have been a high voter turnout; (2) demand that sought return of the mortal remains of Pakistan-trained terrorist of Kashmir origin Afzal Guru, which was also coupled with the suggestion that India subverted justice system by hanging Guru; (3) proposal that sought rehabilitation of the surrendered militants; and (4) the decision to release "all political prisoners" (read anti-India, pro-Pakistan and pro-independence elements and activists of the separatist outfits). Almost all the Kashmiri separatists have identified themselves with the demands number 2 and 4. All these developments have created serious doubts in the minds of the people about the political stability in the state and longevity of the newly-formed coalition government. Jammu & Kashmir, which has suffered during all these years of militancy and secessionist movement in a few parts in the Valley, cannot afford political instability even for a day as it has the potential of undermining the whole electoral system and democracy. The people of the state voted in large numbers to have a government that would undo the wrongs committed by the earlier dispensations and deliver, cater to the day to day needs of the people, end inter-regional bitterness and animosity and keep under check fissiparous tendencies. It would be better if controversial and emotive issues are avoided. In fact, this is the only alternative left. |
