Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 5: Just within the three days of taking charge as the new chief minister of the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron and veteran leader Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has indicated that he is out to bring a change and he means business.
Soon after assuming office Mufti declared war against corruption and to begin with he asked his ministers to ensure that they engage officials with a clean image as their personal staff to avoid embarrassment in future. Mufti has followed the old adage, charity begins at home.
Mufti's recent directive to Police that it should become a source of "reassurance to public than cause of fear" is a clear indication of the fact that highhandedness" won't be tolerated.
Mufti has made his intentions clear that people around him have to fall in line or pack their bags. As a Home Minister Mufti has politely conveyed to Police that it cannot act as a state within a state and has to follow a system and very importantly it has to change its attitude towards the people.
People, who know Mufti, are of the opinion that PDP patron first wants to put the system in place and then govern. "The former chief minister Omar Abdullah during his six year tenure rarely found time to see what is happening around him. He had given unbridled powers to the heads of the departments, which Omar used to head. Most of the time Omar remained busy with twitter and making frequent trips within and outside the country or raking controversies by issuing statements and then forgetting what he had said. The portfolio’s which were held by Omar were handled by his close aides and he used to go by their advice" said a PDP leader.
He claimed that Mufti is a "tough administrator" and he believes in handling the affairs himself. "He has begun with asking his ministers to stay away from corrupt elements and refrain from engaging their kith and kin. As a home minister he has made it clear to police that department has to follow his instructions rather than making him follow their advise.
He said that the new PDP-BJP regime has to clear the mess and strengthen the institutions which were "ruined" by the previous regime. "Mufti sahib wants things to move and is keen to ensure that heads of all the departments become accountable and take the responsibility rather than passing the buck," the leader added.
Mufti's first four days in the office have been eventful and it looks like that he wants to establish his writ as the Chief Minister and he is in no mood to waste time and beat around the bush. Mufti setting up a cabinet subcommittee to assess the damages caused due to 2014 September floods is yet another move aimed at putting the things at place which had gone "haywire" during the Omar led NC-Cong government.
Mufti as the Chief Minister has made a good beginning and he has made it clear that he means business. People who voted in large numbers in 2014 assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir regions are waiting for ground situation to change, and are hoping that PDP-BJP alliance would provide them the much needed respite and mitigate their sufferings to some extent.
